UDUPI, JULY 21. Five persons were killed on the spot and one was seriously injured when a Maruti van and a tanker collided at Saligrama on National Highway 17 on Wednesday. According to the Kota police, the Maruti van bearing a Kerala registration number (KL 06, C 1361) was on its way to Payanur in Kannur district of Kerala from Goa when the accident occurred near the bus stand at Saligrama in Kota police station limits at 6.30 a.m.. The tanker (KA-01, A 7284) was going from Udupi to Kundapur. The deceased, who were travelling by the van, have been identified as Louis Mathew (35), the driver; Baby (45); Molly (40); Lisy Mol (12), and Rony Mathew (21). Sony (25), who was also in the van, was seriously injured. He was rushed to a private hospital at Koteshwar. While Baby, Molly, and Lisy Mol belonged to the same family, Louis Mathew and Rony Mathew were Baby's relatives. Sony was a family friend of Baby. Baby's family, and Rony and Louis Mathew are said to be residents of Thodupuzha in Idukki district of Kerala, while Sony is said to be a resident of Tallipuram in Kannur district, also in Kerala. The impact of the collision was such that the Maruti Omni van was almost sucked into the tanker. A crane was requisitioned from Udupi to separate the van from the tanker. The police and the people of Saligrama had to struggle for one-and-a-half hours to pull out the bodies after separating the two vehicles. Rash driving by the tanker driver is said to have caused the accident. The tanker driver fled the scene. A case has been registered at the Kota police station. The post-mortem was done at the Primary Health Centre in Kota, and the bodies were handed over to the relatives of the deceased, who came from Kerala.
