CM may not attend function

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 21. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, is not likely to participate in the inaugural function of the Madras High Court Bench here on July 24.

The official invitation does not have the name of Ms. Jayalalithaa though the State Law Minister, D. Jayakumar, will deliver a special address.

According to the invitation, the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, will inaugurate the Bench at 4 p.m. He will deliver the inaugural address at a `pandal' erected in front of the palatial buildings at Ulaganeri near here. The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, B. Subhashan Reddy, will preside over the function.

Among those who will address the gathering include the Union Law Minister, H.R. Bharadwaj, the Union Minister of State for Law, K. Venkatapathy, the Supreme Court Judges, Shivraj V. Patil, K.G. Balakrishnan and AR. Lakshmanan, the Madras High Court Judges, N. Dhinakar, and N.V. Balasubramanian and the Madurai Bar Association president, K. Vellaichamy.

Meanwhile, 123 employees of the Madras High Court were transferred to the Madurai Bench today. "They expressed their willingness to be shifted to Madurai," an official said adding that the staff would join duty tomorrow.

Earlier, the Registrar (Administration) of the Madras High Court, R. Venkatesan, and the Registrar (Administration) of the Madurai Bench, S. Palanivelu, inspected the arrangements under way for the inaugural function.

The city police have chalked out an elaborate security scheme for the function. Traffic diversions will be made on the Madurai-Melur National Highway shortly after noon on July 24. "Tight security will be made at the Circuit House and two private hotels on the Alagarkoil Road where the VIPs will stay. The police will take positions at the venue 24 hours in advance," a police official said.
