Head constable held

MADURAI, JULY 21. A police head constable and his accomplice were arrested on charges of abduction, extortion and robbery here today.

According to the police, R. Rajendran (37), head constable attached to the Thilagarthidal police station, his friend S. Raja (33), of Paravai, and a few others kidnapped a business men, S. Muthu (34) of Ramanathapuram near the railway station here on Tuesday evening.

The confined him at an isolated lorry shed near Paravai and snatched his purse containing Rs.7000. When the victim tried to raise an alarm, they assaulted him and demanded Rs.50000 as ransom.

However, during the early hours Muthu gave a slip to the gang and escaped. He lodged a complaint with the Sellur police. A special team arrested Rajanednran and Raja.

Cases under section 364(A) (kidnapping), 392 (robbery), 368 (wrongful confinement) and 386 (extortion) were registered against them. The head constable was placed under suspension.

A search is on for others accused in the case, the police said.
