Row over road settled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 21. The row over the construction of a coastal road at Poovar which led to clash between two communities on July 16 was amicably resolved at a conciliatory meeting convened by the District Collector, Tinku Biswal, here today. The Additional District Magistrate, Prabhakaran Nair, said the meeting had decided to reduce the width of the proposed road by one metre to provide easy entry for the houses lining the side. The district administration will provide special sanction to revise the plan. The District Panchayat will also provide funds to the Kerala Water Authority to relay the pipeline running beside the road. As many as 12 persons, including a Circle Inspector of Police, were injured in the clashes that broke out between two communities over the coastal road.

Plea to retain goods shed

The Transport Minister, R. Balakrishna Pillai, today urged the Railways to retain the railway goods shed while taking up the construction of the second terminal at Kochuveli. He was addressing a meeting of Railway and FCI officials and trade union leaders. The Minister said the move to close down the goods shed would impact on the livelihood of thousands of workers.

Education Rights day

The All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) observed Wednesday as Education Rights Day to demand an end to the commercialisation of the education sector in the name of self-financing institutions. Students affiliated to the AIDSO took out marches and organised public meetings at the district level.

Bank branch

The 306th branch of the Catholic Syrian Bank was inaugurated here on Wednesday. The Reserve Bank regional director, N. Krishna Mohan, inaugurated the branch and an ATM. The chairman of the Catholic Syrian Bank, N. R. Achan, presided over the function.

Award

M.Krishnan, Chartered Engineer and Approved Valuer has been selected for the Rashtriya Gaurav Award of the India International Friendship Society, New Delhi. It will be presented to Mr.Krishnan, who has served as the Executive Engineer of the Housing Board and the Chief Engineer of S.N.Trust, at a function to be held at Chennai on July 30.
