dated July 23, 1954: March into Goa

The first batch of volunteers who will march into Goa on August 15, Indian Independence Day, is now almost complete, according to the Action Committee set up by various Goan nationalist parties in Bombay. One "brigade" of the "Azad Goa Dal" comprising Goan residents in the city is being formed in Bombay and another in Maharashtra under the leadership of Mr. N.G. Goray, Praja Socialist leader. The Goan People's Party, which is doing underground work in the Portuguese territory, is understood to have organised a volunteer corps of 250 inside Goa. These volunteers would join the volunteers from India, who would cross the border in "jathas." The Goan People's Party has also issued an appeal to Goans in Portuguese territory to consider August 15 as "zero hour" and rise as "one man against the Portuguese rule." The party has warned the Portuguese Government that any "violence against the people or the volunteers would be resisted."
