This Day That Age
The manufacture of tubeless car tyres in India by the Dunlop Rubber Co. (India), Ltd. was announced at a press conference in Calcutta on July 21 by Mr. Cecil Stack, Managing Director of the firm. A demonstration was arranged opposite the Victoria Memorial. Welcoming the gathering, Mr. Stack said that tubeless cycle tyres had been marketed in the past and many people had made suggestions for a tubeless tyre for motor cars. Research and experiments carried out by the Dunlop organisation in England over a considerable period had resulted in the tubeless tyre being introduced in that country. Similar experiments for the past year or more were carried out at the firm's factory at Sahaganj and the result was the tubeless tyre which they saw before them. Mr. E.N. Wood, Technical Manager of the firm, who also spoke, gave an idea of the manufacture of the tyre and its advantages. In place of the familiar inner tube, he said, the tyre had an air-retaining liner which was moulded to the inside of the cover. The tyre would fit the standard rim, and also incorporated beads of a special construction designed to give a complete air seal when forced against the rim seats by the air pressure inside the tyre, and this would prevent any escape of air. The valve which was of standard pattern was sealed in the rim's valve hole.
