Thrissur
By Our Staff Reporter
THRISSUR, JULY 22. The Kerala Governor, R. L. Bhatia, has emphasised the need for ensuring quality in education. Inaugurating the Silver jubilee celebrations of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here today he said: "The progress of any country depends primarily on the standard of education that is being imparted at all levels from the kindergarten onwards. Whatever be the subject one has to have a sound grounding on it.'' Emphasising that education did not imply mere mugging up of facts and figures and learning by rot a few theories and theorems, the Governor said: "What is paramount is practical wisdom, the ways and means to face crucial moments of life with equanimity.'' The ultimate aim of education, ever since the advent of civilisation had been to provide a sound body and stable mind to younger ones, enabling them to encounter the challenges that lied ahead, he said.
`Know your heritage'
Without a sound base on the humanistic norms and nuances of our cultural heritage, we cannot claim to be Indians. What distinguishes a learned man from the uninitiated is his capacity to face crucial crises of life, the intimate quality of his response and behaviour in relation to his brethren, rich as well as poor. We have produced a vast population able to read and write, but are they enabled to distinguish between good and bad, fair and foul. It is an irony, if not paradox, that most of us who profess to be educated fall easy prey to shallow appeals of sensation. It is therefore imperative that education should include these three cardinal aspects training the intellect, cultivating the imagination and refining the emotions, the Governor said.
