Rural banks' meet tomorrow
DHARAWADBELGAUMSHIMOGAKOLAR, JULY 22.JULY 22.JULY The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has convened a State-level coordination and review committee meeting of all the regional rural banks (RRBs) in Karnataka under the auspices of the Malaprabha Grameena Bank, Dharwad, here on Saturday. The meeting is being held in the context of the directive of the Union Government to double the assistance to agriculture in the coming three years. The chairmen of all the 13 RRBs in the State will attend the meeting. B.B. Mohanti, Chief General Manager of NABARD, will inaugurate the meeting, which is expected to go into the issues such as refinance, microfinance, and government-sponsored schemes.
Training, awareness programme
DHARAWADBELGAUMSHIMOGAKOLAR, JULY 22.JULY 22.JULY The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) will launch an awareness campaign with the objective of preventing female foeticide and illegal abortions under a project, "The girl child and prevention of female foeticide.'' Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the president of the FPAI's Belgaum branch, H.B. Kulkarni, said the project included 33 villages in the district. It included training to project staff who were required to establish a rapport with the members of public so that they could attempt to change attitudes towards the girl child. The role of private medical practitioners and women and child welfare agencies would be analysed. The cooperation of people's representatives, educational institutions, and print and audio-visual media would be sought. The vice-president of branch, S.K. Bhat, said the FPAI had found that at least two medical practitioners were suspected to be using ultrasonography for sex determination of foetus, and the District Health Office would be requested to investigate.
New system for PG admissions
DHARAWADBELGAUMSHIMOGAKOLAR, JULY 22.JULY 22.JULY Kuvempu University has introduced a new system of admission to postgraduate courses through counselling from the academic year 2004-2005 to reduce the time taken for the admissions process and maintain transparency in the selection procession, according to a press note issued by the Deputy Registrar of the university. According to the press note, there will not be a centralised system of admission of candidates and the entire process of admission will be conducted at the Administrative Building, Jnana Sahyadri Shankaraghatta, for all courses except M.Com., for which admissions will be made by the department concerned at the postgraduate centre at Tolahunise in Davanagere. The dates for admissions for the following postgraduate courses are as follows: Special Category (NCC/NSS/PH/Sports/Kannada Medium): All faculty - July 24; Merit category (Arts, Commerce, Education, Law faculties) - July 26; Science faculty - July 27; Merit-cum-payment category (Arts, Commerce, Education, Law faculties) - July 28; Science faculty - July 29; Out-of-State students (all faculty) - July 31.
`BSNL neglecting Kolar'
DHARAWADBELGAUMSHIMOGAKOLAR, JULY 22.JULY 22.JULY Members of the students' wing of the Janata Dal (S) staged a demonstration in front of the office of the General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) here today in protest against the alleged callous attitude of the BSNL authorities. They said that the BSNL had failed to provide mobile-phone SIM cards and were allegedly allowing the sale of the cards in the black market. The protestors alleged that complaints related to faulty telephones and excess billing had received no response from BSNL. Later, the BSNL officials held a meeting with the protestors, and it was decided to bring the complaints to the notice of the higher authorities. It was also decided that the top officials would tour the district to study the problems.
