Expo on architecture begins at Thiruvalla

PATHANAMTHITTA, JULY 22. The four-day exhibition of architecture, building materials, interiors and allied products, Architectural World-2004, organised by the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), began at the Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma Auditorium in Thiruvalla today.

The Thiruvalla municipal chairman, Raju Mundamattom, inaugurated the exhibition. The secretary of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church, Fr. Cherian Thomas, presided over the function. The chairman of the IIA, Kottayam centre, Jose K. Mathew, and the chairman-designate, A.V. Abraham, and the convener of the exhibition, Jacob Chandy, spoke.

Mr. Jose said that the aim of the annual exhibition was to provide people with the information required for construction of buildings.

According to K. Mohandas, director of the Ernakulam-based event management group, `Showindow', the exhibition has 65 stalls that display a wide range of products. An aluminium composite material which can be a substitute for the imported aluminium panels or conventional building cladding material like marble, granite or concrete, modern roof and floor tiles, electrical fittings, latest in the fields of air-conditioning and refrigeration, modern kitchens, sanitary fittings, acoustic systems and various cement products are among the items on display.

Security systems

The security systems displayed at a stall opened by a Kochi-based company include security alarm, fire alarm, automatic door opener, remote gate opener, access control CCTV and cameras. The State Bank of Travancore has opened a stall detailing the housing finance schemes of the bank and its attractions.

Mr. Jose K. Mathew will give a presentation on `trends and styles in architecture' at 6-30 p.m. tomorrow. The head of the Department of Architecture at the TKM Engineering College, Kollam, Eugene Nazareth Pandala, will give a presentation on `mud technology and contemporary architecture' at 6-30 p.m. on Saturday.
