Newcastle signs up Kluivert

NEWCASTLE: Newcastle signed Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert on a three-year contract on Wednesday, with manager Bobby Robson comparing the deal to club legend Alan Shearer's move eight years ago. Kluivert, the Netherlands' all-time leading scorer, was released by Barcelona at the end of last season.

``I just think it's a great capture,'' Robson said as Kluivert was unveiled at a news conference. ``I think it will be one of the most significant signings Newcastle has made in many, many years. In my feeling, it's very similar to the feeling in the city when the club decided to bring Alan Shearer back here.''

Terms of the transfer weren't disclosed, although Robson said Newcastle didn't overspend. The 28-year-old Kluivert, also a former AC Milan and Ajax player, said he always wanted to play in England.And he was excited about playing alongside the Newcastle-born Shearer, a former England captain who joined from Blackburn. — AP
