Brazil salutes Eusebio
RIO DE JANEIRO: Eusebio was a torment for Pele and Co. at the 1966 World Cup, and Brazilians never forgot the loss or their respect for Portugal's greatest player. On Wednesday, Brazilian soccer paid Eusebio its highest honour, adding his footprints to the Sidewalk of Fame at Rio's Maracana stadium, the world's largest.
The ``Black Panther,'' 62, opens the international wing of the gallery, which bears tributes to Pele, Garrincha, Jairzinho and other Brazilian greats.
Born in Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony, Eusebio Ferreira da Silva was the standout of a talented generation of African soccer players that emerged in the 1960s.
His speed, ball-handling and booming shot made him a star for Benfica. He was Europe's top scorer in 1968 and 1973. AP
