Protests continue in Manipur
IMPHAL,
JULY 22.
Defying the indefinite curfew, members of various women's organisations, particularly the Meira Paibi (torch-bearing women), today staged sit-in protests in the four valley districts of Manipur.
The demonstrations were part of the intensification of the agitation against the killing of Thangjam Manorama Devi, a resident of Bamon Kampu in Imphal East district, allegedly by 17 Assam Rifles after she was picked up from her residence on July 11.
Both in Imphal East and West districts, women in their traditional attires held placards that read "Remove Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958" and "Punish the Assam Rifles Personnel concerned."
