Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JULY 22 . The Federation of Farmers of the Cauvery Old Ayacut Areas of 17 irrigation channels in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Namakkal and Erode districts has urged the Government to write off all farm loans. Farmers were facing acute distress. It was not enough to defer recovery. The Government should write off all farm loans, the federation said in a resolution passed at a meeting held here recently. The meeting urged the Government to explore the feasibility of releasing at least 5,000 cusecs of water from the Mettur reservoir so that at least farmers in the old ayacut areas of the Cauvery in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Namakkal and Erode districts could take up cultivation this season. The federation asked the Government to sanction farm power connections on a priority basis in these districts as was being done in the core delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. It pleaded with the State and Central governments to take steps to link rivers and ensure remunerative prices for farm produces. It resolved to take out a rally and stage a demonstration here on July 30 to press their demands. The former MLA, Y.Venkatesa Dikshithar, presided.
