`Admit children from unrecognised schools'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, JULY 22 . The Joint Director, Non-formal Education, Lakshmi, has said officials of the Department of Education and heads of schools should not hesitate to admit the children coming to their schools from unrecognised schools, as the Government had ordered the closure of such unapproved institutions across the State in the wake of the fire tragedy at a Kumbakonam school.

Addressing a meeting with the Education Department officials across the district this evening, Ms. Lakshmi, said 42 unrecognised schools had been identified across Tirunelveli and these schools would be closed immediately. The students studying in these schools would be admitted to the recognised schools.

The heads of institutions should accord top priority to admitting the children from the unrecognised schools, she said.

Speaking at an in-camera meeting with heads of all schools and education officials in the district last evening, Ms. Lakshmi said the headmasters of the schools could conduct classes on shift system after getting proper permission from the Chief Educational Officers of the district concerned if there was a dearth for space in their schools.

Ms. Lakshmi said government, corporation, municipality and panchayat schools in the district would soon get new school buildings with two or three classrooms under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan program. Classes from lower kindergarten to 5th standard should be conducted on the ground floor while more than two stairs should be provided to all other floors to facilitate easy evacuation of children in case of any emergency.

She asked the headmasters to inform the officials concerned of the nearby schools functioning under thatched sheds and the unrecognised schools, which should be closed immediately after admitting the children in the nearest recognised school.

The heads of the educational institutions, who participated in the meeting, gave an undertaking in black and white that there were no makeshift structures on their school premises.

Ms. Lakshmi also asked the assistant and additional assistant educational officers and block resource teachers to inspect the schools in their area to ensure the removal of thatched sheds before July 30.
