VILLUPURAM, JULY 22. The tahsildar, S. Rajendran, yesterday ordered the closure of an "unrecognised high school" on Nehru Street at Tindivanam citing the building's dilapidated condition. In a notice put up at the building, the tahsildar has stated that inspection of the building had revealed that it could not be used for any public purpose, and if it were to be used, permission ought to be obtained from the authorities concerned. Therefore, invoking the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Buildings Licensing Act (1965), he had ordered its closure.
`1878 building'
According to the president of the Vedavalli Ammal Trust, G.R. Ravindran, the building was built by the Trust in 1878. Later, it was leased out to the Muslim Educational Society for running a school. Subsequently, the secretary of the Tagore Educational Society, K.C. Rajapather, set up a middle school. In the past few years he had even started admitting students to classes IX and X by claiming that recognition would soon be obtained. Mr. Ravindran alleged that the school management had got a certificate from an engineer, R. Krishnasamy, that the building was constructed in 1960. He disputed the claim by stating that the executive engineer of the Public Works Department, R. Raji, in his report noted that the building was constructed in 1878 and had now become uninhabitable.
