Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 22. No industries polluting air and water would hereafter be permitted in the Union Territory, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told the Assembly today. The Chief Minister said during question hour that there was no slackness on the part of the government in taking action against industries polluting the environment and also water bodies. Earlier, raising the issue of tanks and river water sources being polluted by chemical units in Pondicherry, C. Jayakumar (TMC) said that one could come across the dumping of effluents and solid wastes by some industries in Ousteri and other tank beds in Pondicherry. The threat arising out of this to fish in the tanks and also its impact on inland fishermen was so serious that the government should keep vigil on the industries causing damage to the water bodies.
