Declare Pondy drought-hit region, urge legislators

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 22. Members today urged the Government to declare Pondicherry a drought-hit region, adopting the norms the neighbouring State had been applying to bring relief to the farmers.

Raising the issue, the V. Vaithilingam (Cong.) told the Assembly that Cuddalore and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu had already been declared drought-hit pockets by that State Government. Why should not Pondicherry Administration adopt the same yardstick and declare Pondicherry also drought-hit, as there was practically not much difference in the climatic conditions of villages here, he asked.

When the Education and Revenue Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan came out with details on the yardstick adopted before taking a decision to declare a region drought-hit, the members and the Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, said there should be full consideration of the failure of monsoon causing havoc in farm sector. The Minister said he would take into consideration the points raised by members. V.M.C. Sivakumar (DMK) said he had already been bringing to the notice of the government that the area under cultivation was dwindling fast in Karaikal because of vagaries of monsoon and non-availability of water for irrigation.
