Cuddapah
By Our Staff Reporter
CUDDAPAH, JULY 22. Nearly 300 farmers besieged the KC Canal Deputy Executive Engineer's office at Mydukur on Thursday, in a half-naked protest, demanding maintenance of the Minimum Drawal Down Level (MDDL) of 854 ft. at Srisailam reservoir, scrapping of G.O. No. 69 and release of water to KC Canal. In the protest organised by the Jala Sadhana Samithi, its convenor, M.J. Subbarami Reddy, the Rythu Seva Sangham president, D.N. Narayana, the Rythu Seva Samakhya member, Polu Konda Reddy, the Cuddapah District Rythu Sangham general secretary, D. Chandramouleeswara Reddy, the TDP leader, Redyam Venkata Subba Reddy, the BJP Legal Cell president, Putha Lakshmi Reddy and the BJYM leader, Prathap Reddy, demanded the Government to come to the rescue of KC Canal ayacutdars whose fields were parched for the fourth successive year. They forced out the DEE office employees and picketed it for about three hours.
Alamatti water sought
Speaking on the occasion, the leaders demanded that the Government fix the Rayalaseema region's share in the water to be released from Alamatti reservoir. All the political parties had promised maintenance of the MDDL at 854 ft. in Srisailam reservoir and scrapping of G.O. 69 of 1996, which reduced the MDDL to 836 ft., and secured the farmers' votes but were non-committal thereafter, they alleged. The political parties would incur the ryots' wrath if they ignored the issue, they warned.
Vent closure demanded
They demanded closure of the last vent at Sunkesula reservoir and removal of obstructions along the KC Canal in Kurnool, to facilitate water release to the ayacut. Disputing the claims made by leaders of Krishna delta that paddy alone could be raised in the area, they urged the Government to ensure sowing of `dry paddy' crop which could withstand water deficiency.
