Keshav widens lead

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 22 . Keshav Misra produced a steady round of three-under 69 to extend his lead to 10 strokes after the third round in the Northern India Open amateur golf championship at the Army Golf Course here on Thursday.

Misra lived up to the grand show, a record-breaking 63 he had in the second round on Wednesday as he holed five regulation birdies to keep himself way ahead of rest of the field. Misra had a three-round aggregate of 11-under 205 going into the final round of the first tournament on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour.

Ranjit Singh grabbed the sole second position, at 215, after carding a round of 71 as just four sub-par rounds were witnessed on the third day. Kapil Dev and Vikram Rana, both posting 71, were the others who managed to scrape through on a hot and humid day. Simarjeet Singh and Vikrant Chopra were on the joint third position, but Simarjeet will make it to the leader group due to better count-back score.

Misra opened with a birdie but soon found the round and the short course getting into his way. He three-putted the par-four second before he reeled off back-to-back regulation birdies on the fourth and fifth holes and recovered in time. Misra missed a five-footer par putt on the eighth to take the turn at one-under.

Two more birdies on the home stretch, on the par-four 10th and par-five 14th, helped him to a decent finish.

Kolkatan Ranjit Singh scored the first eagle of the tournament, holing the par-five 12th from 15 feet. A driver and seven-iron gave him a straight eye to the hole and Ranjit Singh made no mistake in putting that out.

The scores: Keshav Misra (73, 63, 69) 205; Ranjit Singh (76, 68, 71) 215; Simarjeet Singh (70, 73, 73) and Vikrant Chopra (71, 72, 73) 216; Kapil Dev (75, 72, 71) and Vikramjit Singh (74, 69, 75) 218; Vikram Rana (75, 73, 71) 219; Gagan Verma (74, 73, 73) 220; Sandy Lehal (75, 73, 73) Gaganjit Bhullar (75, 72, 74) and Jagmohan S.
