Dacoits kill girl

Sriperumbudur July 22. Dacoits killed a 17-year-old girl and decamped with 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery after causing grievous injuries to other inmates of a PWD contractor, Jayachandran's house here in early hours today.

According to the police, the inmates heard their dog bark at around 1-30 a.m. When the contractor's father Balakrishnan (60) came out, the dacoits attacked him. After entering the house, the gangsters attacked Jayachandran, his son Vasanth (14) and forced Jayachandran's wife Vijaya (35) to part with the almirah keys. When she resisted, she was also attacked. Meanwhile, a dacoit strangulated Jayachandran's daughter, Pavithra, when she attempted to raise an alarm. The dacoits were said to have fed the dog with biscuits laced with sleeping pills. The dacoits decamped with 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 25,000 in cash. Senior police officials visited the spot. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital at Porur.

2 die in road accident

DINDIGUL JULY 22. Two persons were killed when a moped collided with a car at Ambathurai near here last evening.

R. Paulraj and A. Manicka Simon Durai of Kodai Road were thrown into a deep gorge adjacent to the Dindigul-Madurai main road and died on the spot. They were going to N. Panjampatti for collecting sapota from a farm.

Elephant tusk seized

ERODE JULY 22. The Anthiyur Forest personnel have arrested three persons for possessing an elephant tusk weighing 4.75 kg. According to forest officials, during combing operations by the Special Task Force (STF) police and forest personnel in the Athani Karumparai forest areas last night, Palanisamy of Karumparai, Kutty of Dhoddakomai and Bhomman of Sundakaradu tribal settlements were seen standing near the Madaiyan temple with a gunny bag. The tusk was found in the bag. This evening the three were produced before the Bhavani Judicial Magistrate, N. Vasantha Leela, who remanded them to 15 days judicial custody.

5 panchaloha idols found

Kumbakonam July 22. Five panchaloha idols were unearthed at Natham near here today. The 20-cm high idols were found when construction work was on for a group house for a parent whose child had died in the July 16 fire in a private school. The idols were that of Nataraja, an ambal in sitting position and another ambal in standing position, Bairavar and Sivalingam. Revenue officials took possession of the idols.

The Thanjavur Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, had ordered the construction of group houses for the parents of the fire accident victims. Thirteen children from the village died in the accident.

Welfare boards merged

CHENNAI JULY 22. Nine welfare boards have been amalgamated with the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Social Security and Welfare Board. The Governor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao, has approved the amalgamation and a notification to this effect was issued on Wednesday.

The nine boards are: the Auto Rickshaws and Taxi Drivers Welfare Board, the Washermen Welfare Board, the Hair Dressers Welfare Board, the Tailoring Workers Welfare Board, the Palm Tree Workers Welfare Board, the Handicraft Workers Welfare Board, the Handloom and Handloom Silk Weaving Workers Welfare Board, the Footwear and Leather Goods and Tannery Workers Welfare Board, and the Artists Welfare Board. All the assets and liabilities of the nine boards will now be transferred to the Manual Workers Social Security and Welfare Board.

Common entrance test

CHENNAI JULY 22. The Consortium of Self-Financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu, conducting common entrance test on July 24 and 25 for seats under management quota, has completed all preparations and will publish results on August 5, as stipulated by the Madras High Court.

Detailing the arrangements for the CET, the Consortium president, Jeppiaar, said about 33,000 applications had been received for over 32,000 seats under the management quota in 198 unaided engineering colleges. The examinations will be held at 60 centres all over the State and special bus services had been arranged by the managements of colleges in the area. The police have also been approached for security, he said. While the Physical Science test is scheduled to be held between 2.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. on July 24, Mathematics is scheduled for July 25, between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

Hall tickets have been sent to almost all the eligible candidates, he said, adding the attendance sheet featured the photograph and a scanned signature of the candidates, making impersonation impossible. The margin of error will be minimal in the valuation of answer sheets as well, as the Consortium is to employ an innovative double scanning technique, Mr. Jeppiaar said. Results will be displayed in all the constituent colleges of the Consortium on July 5, besides being available on its website — www.tnsfconsortium.org.

45 per cent pass

CHENNAI JULY 22. About 45 per cent of students, who took special supplementary higher secondary examination in June, have passed. Of the around 1.04 lakhs, 47,463 students were successful, according to an official release issued today.

Training programme

KARUR JULY 22 . The Small Industries Service Institute, Chennai, will organise an entrepreneurship development programme for a month on cell phone repairing and servicing here from August 11. Those who want to apply for the protramme should have passed Standard X and aged above 18 years. They should register their names with S. Dhatchinamurthy, Programme Cordinator, SISI, No.65/1, Guindy, Chennai 600 032 (Phone: 22341011 and E-mail: sisichennai@eth.net), on or before August 5.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI JULY 22. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 74.76 feet today. The inflow was 3402 cusecs but there was no discharge.

Burglars strike at fuel station

Tirunelveli July 22 . Three unidentified burglars struck at a fuel station in Shencottai early this morning and took away Rs.3,000 in cash after attacking the personnel there.

The police said the gang entered the fuel station near the bus-stand, owned by M. Shammi Kapoor (34) of Varkala in Kerala. After robbing Rs.1,000 from Chokkalingam, fuel station worker, the gang attacked others in the fuel station and took Rs.2,000 in cash. They also took chequebooks, bank passbooks and the passport of Shammi Kapoor.

Based on a complaint from the proprietor of the fuel station, the police have filed a case.

Youth murders woman

Tirunelveli July 22 . A 55-year-old woman was murdered last night when she confronted a youth, who allegedly teased her daughter.

The police said M. Chellammal (55) of Rajagopalapuram under the Maanur police station limits had a wordy duel with D. Palavesam (22) of the same area last night, as the latter teased her daughter, Somasundari (18). Enraged, Palavesam allegedly attacked Chellammal with a sickle, killing her on the spot. When her husband, Maappillaisamy (70) tried to save his wife, he sustained cut injuries and was admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

Voice-recording facility

Tirunelveli July 22 . A voice-recording facility has been established at the office of the Executive Engineer (Enforcement) of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Madurai to make recording of the complaints from the public about power theft.

According to the Additional Chief Engineer, Tirunelveli Distribution Circle, S. Aavudaisangu, the public may contact 0452 - 2537508 to register their complaints of power theft. Details about the informers would not be revealed at any circumstance.

SIM card distribution

Tirunelveli July 22. The Tirunelveli Telecom Circle of BSNL will issue 2,400 SIM cards to those who registered their names in the `waiting list,' from July 24 to 28.

According to the General Manger of BSNL Tirunelveli Telecom Circle, V. Raju, those who got tokens from 2,420 to 3,233 can get the cards from the Customers Service Centre at the GM's Office at Vannarpettai and the cards will be issued at the Customers Service Centre, Tenkasi, for tokens from 669 to 1,090.

The Customers Service Centre, Sankarankovil will issue the cards for tokens from 341 to 570 and the Customers Service Centre at Valliyoor will issue the cards for tokens from 634 to 760.

Those with the tokens from 346 to 523 can approach the telegraph office, Ambasamudhram, the token holders from 904 to 1,604 can contact the authorised dealer, Standard Agencies, Elite Opticals near Thevar statue near Tirunelveli Junction.

Killed

ERODE JULY 22 . A lecturer was killed in a road accident here on Wednesday. According to the police, J. Sugumar (32) of Erode, with Sri Vasavi College, Chitode, was returning to Erode in his two-wheeler along with another lecturer Gowrishankar (31), who rode pillion.

The two-wheeler was supposed to have been hit from behind by a state transport bus near a retail petrol outlet on the highway. Sugumar died on the spot and Gowri Shankar who sustained serious injuries was removed to private hospital here.

Condoling the death of Sugumar, the principal, teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the college wore black badges today.

Seized

Dharmapuri July 22 . The Dharmapuri police seized banned raffle tickets worth Rs. 2 lakhs at the bus stand here today. The police said that following instructions from the Superintendent of Police, S. Rajendiran, a team conducted search operations near the bus stand and seized the lotteries. One person was arrested in this connection.

Demonstration

Dharmapuri July 22 . The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam (TVS) affiliated to the CPI staged a demonstration in front of the Dharmapuri Central Cooperative Bank here yesterday demanding adequate drought relief to farmers in the district. The farmers claimed that the relief extended to the farming community was meagre and not reaching all the affected farmers. They also requested waiver of all cooperative loans.

Murder

Dharmapuri July 22 . The police have launched a search for a five-member gang that murdered a taxi driver and escaped in his car here on Monday. The police said the gang had hired the taxi of Velu (31), Tirupathur, under the ruse of going to Kaveripattinam. After filling fuel at a petrol bunk, the gang had reportedly murdered Velu and disposed of the body by dumping it at a lake in Karimangalam.
