Women's relay team's entry confirmed
NEW DELHI,
JULY 22.
Following the expiry of the qualification period on July 21, the Indian women's 4x400m relay team is a confirmed entry for the Athens Olympic Games.
The team has an average time of 3:28.44 to be ranked 13th in the world. The top 16 teams are eligible for the Games in the four relays.
The Indian men's 4x400m relay team, however, went out of the reckoning. After the African championships in Brazzaville, Congo, the Indian team actually dropped three places to be 18th in the list. South Africa, Botswana and Nigeria made the qualification, filling in the last three spots in the 16-team field.
In the women's section also, two African teams, Senegal and Nigeria got into the 4x400m top16-rankings, based on the timings in Brazzaville, pushing France and Australia out. However, India retained its 13th place, gained solely on the strength of its performances in the Asian Grand Prix meets.
