NEW DELHI, JULY 22. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy, said the State Government was examining the legal aspects on the issue of providing five per cent reservation to Muslims in education. Responding to questions following the Andhra Pradesh High Court decision staying the State Government's order, he said that his Government was thinking of bringing in legislation, if needed.
TDP stand
The former Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, told presspersons that the Telugu Desam Party too had given an assurance to provide three per cent reservation for socially and economically backward sections of society. He said that while his party favoured affirmative action, it was not for reservation on the basis of religion as it was not certain whether the move would stand in a court of law. Asked about the party's stance in regard to the lapsing of the ban on the People's War, Mr. Naidu said the TDP was for peace and a permanent solution to the problem and would cooperate with the Government. On the threat to the lives of prominent people from the group, Mr. Naidu said the State Government must look into this. Asked whether the talks should be held with the PW, Mr. Naidu said there was no harm in negotiating.
