Mohan Kanda reviews law and order situation

HYDERABAD: The Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, reviewed the law and order situation with district Collectors and also the arrangements being made for the Krishna Pushkarams.

According to an official release, the Chief Secretary held a video conference in this regard and instructed officials to visit remote areas to know the problems of people and take redressal measures. He also advised them to review the implementation of developmental programmes in the districts at regular intervals.

YSR takes Re.1 pay

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that he is taking a salary of Re.1 per month only.

A communication of the CMO here on Thursday clarified that Dr. Reddy took a similar decision during 1978-83 both as an MLA and as a Minister in the Cabinets of T. Anjaiah, Bhavanam Venkatram and K. Vijayabhaskara Reddy.

Temple land distribution

Hyderabad: An extent of 42 acres of land belonging to Sri Siddeswara Swamy temple at Aluru near Kurnool is being acquired for distribution among weaker sections.

The Endowments Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, told Y. Sai Prasad Reddy of Congress in the Assembly on Thursday that he would also make efforts to recall archakas of the temple belonging to Karnataka who were allegedly sent away by a former MLA.

Bill to rename varsity

HYDERABAD: A bill seeking to amend the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act, 1991, to change the name of Nagarjuna University as `Acharya Nagarjuna University' was introduced in the State Assembly by the Minister for Higher Education, P. Venkateswara Rao, on Thursday.

The bill seeks to replace an ordinance which was promulgated by the Governor on January 23, 2004.

According to the statement of objects and reasons, the executive council of the university at its meeting held on September 11, 2002 resolved to change the name and recommended to bring in suitable amendments to the Act.

Nominations for panel posts

Hyderabad: Yanamala Ramakrushnudu of TDP, Uttam Kumar Reddy and B. Vedavyas (Congress) filed nominations for the chairmanship posts of the Public Accounts Committee, Public Undertakings Committee and Estimates Committee here on Thursday.

Farm loans: Andhra Bank

reduces interest rate

Hyderabad: Andhra Bank has announced reduction in the rate of interest to farmers to 8.5 per cent for limit up to Rs.50,000.

A press release issued here on Thursday said this would be helpful to small and marginal farmers. Recently the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) decided to proactively take steps to mitigate the hardship of farmers, particularly in the cases where the breadwinner had committed suicide.

Seminar on women protection

Hyderabad: Speakers at a seminar on `Women protection - crime against women' held by Media Group here on Thursday demanded stringent punishment to the guilty involved in crime against women.

Speakers regretted dilution laws of late, particularly under Section 398 (A) as more often than not, it is the in-laws who are the causative factors of domestic violence. The meeting ended with an appeal to the Assembly to take up women's issues regularly to protect their interests.

However, the meeting coordinated by the Congress MLA, N. Neelavathi, and attended by the Tourism Minister, J. Geetha Reddy, could not attract the attention of other women legislators though invited.

The meeting was addressed by Anjana Sinha, IPS, Punyavathi, AIDWA president, A.B.K. Prasad, journalist, and Bharathilaxmi, advocate, High Court, apart from the two Congress representatives.

New intelligence official

HYDERABAD: An IPS officer, Charu Sinha, was posted to the Intelligence Department in the cadre of Superintendent of Police (Security).

The Vizianagaram Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration), S. Ranga Reddy, was made as Squadron Commander, Greyhounds. N. Srinivasa Rao, who was recently promoted to the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police, was posted Assistant Commandant of Special Protection Force.

Three of family found dead

ELURU: Three members of a family have reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Narasapur in West Godavari district.

According to the police, Ch. Satyanarayana (55), his wife, Soubhagyalakshmi (48), and son, Anandakumar (25), were found dead at their residence on Old State Bank road at Narasapur on Thursday.

They reportedly left behind a suicide note in which they said financial problems had forced them to resort to the extreme step. The police said Satyanarayana, a retired RTC conductor, incurred heavy losses in business.

Two struck dead by lightning

NIZAMABAD: Two farm labourers were struck dead by lightning and four others sustained injuries in separate incidents in Morthad and Jakranpalli mandals on Thursday. At Palem village in Morthad mandal, five agriculture labourers, working in a farm land were struck by lightning. Hanuma Bhoomavva, a resident of Banda Renjal in Bichkunda mandal, died on the spot. The four others were injured.

Maturi Babu of Kannareddy village in Nagireddipet mandal died when he was struck by lightning at Argul village of Jakranpalli mandal.

Assumes charge

TIRUPATI: M. Suryanarayana Reddy, Additional SP, has taken charge as the principal of the Police Training College at Kalyani Dam near here on Thursday.

He had worked earlier as Railway DSP in Nellore, in Intelligence wing at Tirupati and as inspector in Satyavedu.

Banks told to extend loans

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, on Thursday advised the Karur Vysya Bank officials to extend loans generously to small industrial units.

Speaking after inaugurating an ATM at the Karur Vysya Bank branch at Y.V. Street here, Mr. Ranjan urged the bankers to empathise with the needy sections and assist them financially.

The Cuddapah District Chamber of Commerce president, Munaga Rangaiah Shreshty, who was issued the first ATM card, urged the bank officials to extend housing loans.

Muslim Forum chief calls on YSR

CUDDAPAH: The United Muslim Welfare Forum Honorary president, Ashraf Ali Khan, general secretary, S. Vali, and members of Cuddapah have called on the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at Hyderabad and felicitated him with a shawl, for granting five per cent reservation to Muslim minorities.

Sarpanch sacked

KARIMNAGAR: The district panchayat officer, Sanjeev, sacked the sarpanch, Jetti Anjaiah, of Vattimalla village in Konaraopeta mandal on the charge of swindling about 360 quintals of rice released under the Food-for-work (FFW) scheme.

In a press note here, he alleged that the sarpanch had not taken up desiltation work at Rangaraya tank -- for which the FFW rice was set aside - and sold the rice. The sarpanch also failed to respond to three show-cause notices served on him, he charged.

ADILABAD: The Mancherial police on Thursday organised a free clothes distribution camp at Kotapally mandal headquarter on Thursday. Used clothes worth Rs. 2 lakhs were distributed at the camp. The police had gone from door to door, as part of a rally, and asked people to donate their clothes. The exercise, named `chemata odiche ontiki janedu batta', was organised by Mancherial DSP, Salimuddin, under the supervision of Bellampalli Additional SP, M. Stephen Raveendra.

KARIMNAGAR: The Paramita educational institutions chairman, E. Prasad Rao, was elected district Netball Association president. The Congress leaders -- T. Santosh Kumar, M. Rajender and Srinivas -- were elected vice-presidents.

The Paramita schools PET, G. Venu, was elected secretary, the Arts College PET, K. Ravi Kumar, was elected organising secretary and St. Johns School PET, Y. Prem Reddy, and G. Sudhakar were elected joint secretaries and the ZPP Shatrajpalli PET, L.V Ramana, was elected treasurer, according to a press note.
