Chappal slap: teacher in a spot

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 22. While the memory of a teacher breaking 12 canes on the back of children in a Government school in Khammam district is still green, another teacher in a private school at Bhongir in Nalgonda district whacked two boys with chappals until they fell unconscious and were hospitalised.

The latest incident on Wednesday unearthed some more shocking details about the school.

It is run in a name and location different from the ones for which permission was given.

Shocking report

Stung by the reports submitted by the Deputy District Educational Officer and Mandal Education Officer who inquired into the incident and the affairs of the school, the School Education Minister, N. Rajyalaxmi, on Thursday ordered removal of the teacher, Balaiah, and cancellation of permission for the institution.

The 500-odd students of the school were resettled in different institutions of Bhongir town as per the wishes of the parents.

The Minister also ordered action against authorities who allowed the functioning of the school.

Ms. Rajyalaxmi told reporters that Balaiah had beaten the two children of ninth standard, Phani Kumar and Sandeep Kumar, badly for questioning his teaching standards. The boys told him on his face that they could not grasp the lessons taught by him.

Permission withdrawn

In another instance, the Minister withdrew permission for a women's self-help group, which cooked the mid-day meals for children of a Mandal Parishad primary school in Volagonda mandal of Kurnool district. Sixtyfour children of the school took ill a few days ago for consuming food, which was cooked with a dead lizard. The children started vomiting after having the food, Ms. Rajyalaxmi said.

She added that 37 schools located in dilapidated buildings were shifted in the wake of the Kumbakonam tragedy. Schools in the State did not face the danger of fire accidents but they had the problem of bad buildings.
