By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, JULY 22. Despite deficient rainfall this year, the farmers in Gulbarga district have completed sowing in 78.27 per cent of the targeted area for the kharif season.

According to Agriculture Department officials, sowing had been completed in more than 5.92 lakh hectares out of the targeted 7.56 lakh hectares.

The sowing of the oilseeds and red gram is expected to pick up in the coming days and according to estimates, the area under red gram and sunflower is expected to cross the targeted areas.

Red gram and sunflower can withstand continued dry spells and one or two spells of rainfall in the crucial periods of growth is sufficient to sustain the crop.

The sowing of foodgrain crops had been completed in more than 4.47 lakh hectares as against the target of 5.54 lakh hectares.

Sowing in the remaining areas is expected to finish by the first week of August.

There has been a severe shortfall in the sowing of cereals with only 71,622 hectares being prepared as against the target of 1.25 lakh hectares.

This was because of the delay in the releasing water in the canals of the Upper Krishna Project.

Sowing of the black gram had been completed in 31,347 hectares as against the target of 33,500 hectares.

However, there had been a severe shortfall in the sowing of bajra.

As against a target of 82,500 hectares, sowing had been completed only in 54,474 hectares.

Out of the targeted area of 1.72 lakh hectares of oilseeds, sowing had been completed in 1.23 lakh hectares and is expected to improve after the release of water in the UKP canals.

Among commercial crops, sowing of hybrid cotton had been completed in 9,100 hectares as against the target of 25,000 hectares.

Sowing is expected to increase after the release of water in the UKP canals.
