Lokayuta directs Health Dept. to recover money from doctor

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, JULY 22. The Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala, has directed the Health Department to recover money from the administrative medical officer of Hiriyur taluk hospital, where expired medicines, life-saving drugs, and surgical materials worth Rs. 3 lakh were found.

As Mr. Venkatachala began his day at Hiriyur Taluk Hospital, many people approached him and complained against the doctors, paramedical staff, and facilities in the hospital.

They complained that the doctors promoted their private practice.

They alleged that the doctors did not prescribe medicines without a payment.

A few patients alleged that the electrocardiogram equipment (ECG) was not working and the doctors preferred to get the report from machines that were kept at their homes.

Mr. Venkatachala found a cupboard full of life-saving drugs and surgical materials, which had crossed their expiry date and questioned the authorities about it.

The storekeeper, the administrative medical officer and the assistant drug controller failed to give any explanation.

Mr. Venkatachala then directed the Health Department to recover money from the staff concerned.

He also visited the mortuary and asked the doctors and staff to maintain cleanliness there.

The Lokayukta visited the offices of taluk panchayat, municipal council, taluk and sub-treasury.

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Venkatachala called for disbanding of the Department of Registration.

He said that the office of district registrar should be abolished, as it did not serve any purpose.

H. Sudarshan, chief of task force on Health, M.A. Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner, Narayanaswamy, chief executive officer, G.B. Chebbi, Superintendent of Police, Chandranaik and Ramesh, Superintendents of Police (Lokayukta), were present.
