Students protest against Budget proposals

GULBARGA, JULY 22. The students of the postgraduate departments in the main campus of Gulbarga University boycotted classes today and organised a demonstration outside the administrative office of the to protest against the "anti-education" proposals made in the State Budget by Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) had called upon students to boycott classes and join the protest. In a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the Finance Portfolio, the SFI said that the budget was silent on the long pending demands to open new avenues of employment in institutes of higher education and colleges.

They also demanded the withdrawal of the ban on recruitment in Government departments to facilitate employment opportunities to graduates and postgraduates.

The memorandum wanted the Government to initiate steps to fill the vacant posts of lecturers and teachers in Pre-University colleges and the postgraduate departments in all universities. The students asked the Government to fill the vacant posts in primary schools. They urged the Karnataka Public Service Commission to conduct examinations for filling up the vacant posts in the Karnataka Administrative Services, so that it would provide the unemployed youth a job.
