Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JULY 22. The State Government has issued an order reducing the monthly water tariff for house connection from Rs. 100 to Rs. 80. The deputy Mayor, Alla Challa Rao, releasing copies of the G.O. (M.s.No.251 dated July 9, 2004) to newspersons here on Thursday, said that the new tariff would be implemented from August 1. The order said that the Government decided to reduce the water charges in response to a letter written by the Municipal Commissioner .The order listed the various decisions taken by the Governments on enhancement of water charges in Vijayawada. The recent GO countermanded two earlier orders by the Government asking the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to enhance the tariffs. The Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development issued orders on June 20, 1997 to enhance the tariff from the existing rate of Rs 40 to Rs. 100. The general body of the municipal corporation, in a resolution, rejected the proposal to enhance the water tariff. The Municipal Commissioner referred the decision to Government. The State Government suspended the resolution of the general body under the provisions of Section 679 of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act 1955 and issued a second order asking the Vijayawada municipal corporation to enhance the water tariff for domestic connections from June 18, 2002.
`Poll promise fulfilled'
Mr. Challa Rao said that the reduction of water charges was one of the Congress party's election promises and it had fulfilled it on being elected. He said another election promise was a comprehensive plan for the canal bund residents. The Government would soon issue an order regularising the constructions on the canal bunds and a comprehensive plan to check the dumping of liquid and solid waste into the canals, he added.
