Vijayawada
By M. Rajeev
VIJAYAWADA, JULY 22. Huge accumulated losses on operations notwithstanding, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) continues to maintain its lead over State Transport Units in other States in terms of operational efficiency. For the fifth consecutive year, the corporation has registered impressive performance in fuel consumption and reduction in maintenance costs of spares, lubricants and tyres, in the process of achieving a record 5.37 km per litre mileage. The corporation has registered savings to the tune of over Rs. 90 crores on fuel consumption in the past few years. The figure could have been more, if not for the abnormal hike in diesel prices, which increased by Rs. 4 per litre in the corresponding period. According to the APSRTC executive director, M.V. Nagavender Rao, prudent maintenance and operation procedures followed by the corporation resulted in bringing down the costs on tyres and tubes, lubricants, repairs and spares. While the per kilometre cost on maintenance of tyres and tubes was 44 paise in 1999-2000, it was 35 paise by the end of 2003-04, resulting in savings of over Rs. 20 crores. The costs per kilometre on repairs and spares were also brought down from 41 paise to 34 paise and 26 paise to 20 paise respectively in the past five years, thereby saving about Rs. 40 crores. "We could achieve all this due to the special drives and intensive training camps held for drivers whose performance was not up to the mark. Those who did a good job were given incentives in the form of cash awards," he told The Hindu . The practices adopted by the corporation received nationwide acclaim and the Pune-based Central Road Transport Institute sent an appreciation letter commending its performance. This apart, representatives of several State transport units including from Mumbai and Karnataka were visiting Andhra Pradesh to study these methods.
