Congress spreading misinformation on crime graph: Uma

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL, JULY 22. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, today alleged that some Congress leaders in Madhya Pradesh were trying to spoil the State's image by spreading "false" information that incidence of crime had increased after the Bharatiya Janata Party Government assumed office.

Addressing newsmen at her official residence here today, she said the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had earlier tried to mislead the people by projecting that Gujarat was on fire and there was no check on crimes like rape and murder in that State. After the people of Gujarat called the Congress bluff, Ms. Gandhi's "cronies", the Chief Minister alleged, were now active in Madhya Pradesh and projecting that crime graph here had suddenly shot up.

She claimed that in reality there has been a sharp drop in organised crime during the last few months when compared to ten years of Congress rule. She said that it was only now that a Deputy Superintendent of Police, allegedly involved in a sex racket in Bhopal for many years, has been arrested. There has been no incident of dacoity in the Bhind-Morena area in the recent past, she said adding that the Special Task Force of the State police also achieved a major breakthrough recently when it raided a house in Bihar and succeeded in rescuing a businessman from the clutches of a dreaded gang of kidnappers.

Citing the example of the Simhasta Mahakumbh at Ujjain earlier this year, she said that its smooth conduct is a feather in the cap of the police. She reeled out statistics to convey that there has been a 4 per cent drop in the incidence of rape during the first six months of her Government. She said there were indications that crime was being committed as part of a preconceived and pre-planned conspiracy. Pointing towards a recent incident in which a person from a minority community was beaten to death at a village, she said there are unconfirmed reports that some persons have fanned out in different parts of the State to foment trouble.
