BANGALORE, JULY 22. The Minister for Transport and Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, told the Legislative Assembly today that the Government had decided to upgrade the Kempe Gowda bus station in Bangalore at a cost of Rs. 4.50 crore. Replying to a question from Katta Subramanya Naidu (BJP) during Question Hour, Mr. Kharge said two more floors would be added to the existing building to open more counters for issuing passes and provide room for the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Geographical Information System (GIS). Concreting of the bus bays, renovation of passenger shelters and construction of three Nirmala-type toilets were also planned.
Policemen suspended
Two policemen have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been ordered into the custodial death of Dhananjaya (21) at the Jnanabharati police station in Bangalore on Tuesday night, the Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M.P. Prakash told the House. Replying to the issue raised by Vatal Nagaraj (Vatal Paksha), Mr. Prakash said Dhananjaya and Prakash were chased and caught by a Hoysala patrol team. They reportedly started running on seeing the police vehicle. They were brought to the police station and asked to sit near the lock up. They broke the glass panes of a computer enclosure and used the glass shards to inflict injuries on themselves. Dhananjaya stabbed himself in his abdomen. He was shifted to Victoria Hospital where he died. The assistant sub inspector of police Chennarayappa and the constable Chandrarao had been suspended. Mr. Nagaraj, who was unhappy with the reply given by the Minister, staged a walkout from the House.
