SHIMOGA, JULY 22. One girl died and three others were taken ill at Hullinakatte village in Shikaripur taluk on Wednesday evening after being given tablets for fever. While Triveni (5) died, Ushabai (7), Kavita (5) and Manju (3), are recovering at McGann Hospital here. According to information received here, the Junior Health Inspector Arun Kumar, working at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Hosur, went to Hullinakatte and administered "Chloroquin" tablets to the children who had high fever. Within minutes of taking the tablets, the four children fell ill. They were first shifted to the PHC at Hosur and then to the General Hospital at Shikaripur. As there was no improvement in their condition, they were shifted to McGann Hospital here last evening. But Triveni died on the way. Mr. Arun Kumar has been placed under suspension pending a departmental inquiry. When contacted, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer, S.H. Satish, said that the reason for the death of Triveni could be ascertained only after the post-mortem report was received and the chemical analysis of the contents of the girl's stomach, which were sent to the Forensic Laboratory at Davangere, were made known. Dr. Satish said that the administration of Chloroquin tablets was the normal treatment for patients who had high fever.
