Manjunath to call all-party meet on affiliation to Tumkur varsity

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 22. The Higher Education Minister, D. Manjunath, informed the Legislative Council today that he would invite leaders of all parties to a meeting on Friday to discuss the pros and cons of including colleges in Bangalore Rural and Kolar districts in the jurisdiction of Tumkur University.

Mr. Manjunath, who was responding to Puttanna (Independent), who had raised the issue, said Tumkur University was being carved out of Bangalore University, which had the highest number of affiliated colleges in the country, making it unwieldy and unmanageable. The creation of the new university was also in the interests of students who came from the rural areas and other districts.

Slogans

The Upper House witnessed a few embarrassing moments when some people in the visitors' gallery interrupted Mr, Manjunath's speech by shouting slogans.

The acting Chairman, V.R. Sudarshan, took note of the interruption and warned the members, particularly Mr. Puttanna, that they ought to be very careful while signing the passes for visitors.

Electrocution issue

The Energy Minister, H.D. Revanna, told the Council that in the wake of the death of seven-year-old Anish, who was electrocuted by a cable hanging low on the footpath in Indiranagar in Bangalore last week, many irregularities, dereliction of duty and instances of callousness on the part of the service agencies and the civic authorities had come to light.
