According to the police, Somnath Malhotra, a resident of Model Town in North-West Delhi, was employed as a cashier in a Coca Cola godown, owned by D.N. Kapoor and Associates, located on Kanjhawala Road in Sultanpuri. Yesterday around 12-15 p.m., Mr. Malhotra put Rs. 3 lakhs in the boot of his scooter and left for another Coca Cola godown located at Nirankari Colony in North Delhi.
Even as Mr. Malhotra, a retired non-commissioned officer who was employed as cashier in the godown for the past five years, was on Kanjhawala Road, four young men intercepted him from behind. One of them whipped out a country-made revolver and shot at Mr. Malhotra. As the old man collapsed, they took away his scooter. Mr. Malhotra was rushed to Jaipur Golden Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
The police said the assailants, who were themselves on two scooters, managed to escape from the market area after committing the crime.
So far, the police have not ruled out the possibility of an insider providing information to the assailants.
Meanwhile, a case of murder-cum-robbery has been registered at Sultanpuri police station and efforts are on to identify the assailants.
Family robbed
According to the police, the robbers managed to gain access in the house of Ram Kumar Gupta, a resident of D-46 in Mansarovar Park, around 2-45 p.m. At the time, Mr. Gupta's wife and her three children were present in the house. Mr. Gupta, who owns a brick-kiln at Khekra in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, had gone to the site when the incident occurred.
The police said two of the robbers first pressed the call bell hearing which Mr. Gupta's wife answered the door. As she opened the door, the duo barged into the house. Four of their associates then joined them and forced the family into one room at gun-point. After locking the door from outside, they managed to lay their hands on Rs. 52,000 in cash and jewellery worth almost the same amount.
