New borewells banned in six mandals

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, JULY 22. In view of prevailing drought conditions and depleting groundwater table, the district administration has imposed a ban on sinking new borewells in six drought-affected mandals of the district. The ban, enforced on the Bheemadevarapalli, Gangadhara, Koheda, Husnabad, Konaraopeta and Yellareddypet mandals, will be effective for six months.

Speaking at a review meeting here on Thursday, the Joint Collector, G. Ramnarayana Reddy, termed the six "dark mandals," and said this was due to exploitation of groundwater and continuous drought.

The ban would avoid further exploitation of groundwater, he said, adding that villagers could seek permission from the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) for sinking borewells for drinking water.

Appealing to owners of borewell rigs to get themselves registered with the administration, he said private borewell operators could sink bores only at allocated spots and warned that their rigs would be seized if they violated the orders.

He also warned action against those involved in illegal sand quarrying in the district, and said sand quarrying must be undertaken at only the six spots along the Godavari river belt that had been permitted by the administration.

Mr. Ramnarayana Reddy instructed the authorities to launch a campaign in rural areas to educate villagers about the ill-effects of groundwater exploitation.
