Teachers, students oppose semester scheme

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JULY 22. College teachers coming under Mangalore University and representatives of students' organisations, who participated in a meeting at Mangalagangotri on Thursday, urged the university authorities to withdraw the two-tier semester system introduced for all first year degree courses from the academic year 2004-05.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, B. Hanumaiah, who convened the meeting, could not attend it. The Registrar, K. Sundar Naik, said the Vice-Chancellor was not keeping well.

The meeting took place in the presence of Mr. Naik, the Registrar (Evaluation), K. Sooryanarayana Rao; the Dean of Arts, K.V. Nagaraj; the Dean of Science, K.M. Kaveriappa; the Dean of Commerce, P. Pakkeerappa; and the Head of the Department of Kannada and former Dean of Arts, B.A. Vivek Rai.

The meeting urged the university to retain the new syllabus introduced for the semester scheme and teach the same under the old system.

The meeting also decided to constitute a committee of stakeholders to take a decision on whether the university could implement the semester scheme for degree courses in future. The committee should comprise representatives of teachers and students and experts. It should submit a report after going into the issue, which should be placed before teachers, students, and others, some persons who participated in the meeting said.

The meeting welcomed the fact that the Syndicate of the university had set up a committee to review the fee structure fixed for examinations and other academic-related works.

After discussing at length various aspects of the semester scheme, Jayaprakash Mavinakuli, Head of the Department of Political Science, Mahaveera College, Moodbidri, read out four decisions taken in the meeting. G.N. Bhat, former president of the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers, endorsed them on behalf of all representatives present at the meeting.

The Registrar said that the university would place the outcome of the meeting before the "decision-taking bodies" of the university for their perusal.

If required, a special meeting of the decision-taking bodies would be convened to place before them the demands of the meeting.

A final decision on the issue would be taken by the bodies, he said.
