CHENNAI, JULY 22. After keeping their parents and teachers on tenterhooks throughout the day, nine students, who were reported missing from Chennai Corporation Middle School on Gujji Nayakan Street near Kilpauk, returned to their homes late on Thursday. Nine students of class VI, including five girls, were reported missing on Thursday morning, after the school teachers enquired about mass absenteeism from a single class. Apparently, the students had left their homes around 7 a.m. under the pretext of attending special class.
Police informed
One of the girl's guardians, identified as Malar, and known to everyone in the group had taken the students in two autorickshaws from near their school. Another student, Azhagu, told the teachers that she too was supposed to go with the group but had backed out. The school authorities immediately informed the parents, who filed a complaint with T.P. Chatram police. The Deputy Mayor, R. Thiagarajan, and a few councillors visited the school. The Anna Nagar DMK MLA, Arcot N. Veerasamy, who too met the parents, in a statement issued later, urged the police to expedite the investigation in the case. Later in the night, the Joint Commissioner of Police (North) C. Sylendra Babu, said a police team intercepted an autorickshaw near T. P. Chatram, which carried six of the missing children. They had been moving around the city in the autorickshaw through the day. The other three also returned home later.
