Alandur civic officials walk out in protest

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 22. Complaints of erratic water supply in Alandur and Adambakkam dominated the Alandur Municipality council proceedings on Thursday with municipal officials walking out in protest against allegations made by elected representatives at the meeting.

As the meeting began, the councillors accused the officials of inaction even though the residents had been crying foul over erratic water supply.

They said in several parts of the municipal area, water was supplied once in two weeks, whereas, in Pallavaram, the residents received supply once in three or four days.

The AIADMK councillor, P. Sivaraj, said fervent appeals from residents and elected representatives did not evoke any response from the municipal officials.

He said they did not respond to public complaints. In protest, the officials, led by the Commissioner, S. Swaminathan, walked out of the meeting.

The council resolved to seek an inquiry by the Regional Director of Municipal Administration into the allegations. It also resolved to push for enhanced water supply for the municipal area. Five resolutions pertaining to administrative issues were deferred following the walk-out by the officials.

In another resolution, the council earmarked Rs. 10 lakhs for developing the infrastructure of Thiruvalluvar Middle School, a government-aided school in Adambakkam. The school building was in a dilapidated state, said the Municipal Chairman, R.S. Bharathi. About 450 students, mostly from poor families, studied in the school.

Supply dwindled

Later, in a statement the United Forum of Nanganallur Welfare Associations said the municipal area received about 32 lakh litres a day during peak season but for the past two months, the supply has dwindled to 25 lakh litres a day.
