COIMBATORE, JULY 22. With the launching of the Married Accommodation Project (MAP) to be implemented in four phases, the entire accommodation requirements of defence personnel would be met over a period of six years, the Air Marshal V.A. Patkar, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Maintenance Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF), said here on Wednesday. Air Marshal V.A. Patkar was here to lay the stone for the construction of 303 quarters for Air Force Personnel at a cost of Rs. 21.95 crores in Sulur. He said the total outlay of the project for two lakh houses was Rs. 18,000 crores and the first phase involved construction of 50,406 dwelling units for the Army, 3,225 for Navy and 7,297 for the Air Force spread out in 79 locations across the country. The project would begin immediately in over 18 stations and 5 Base Repair Depot Station of IAF in Sulur is the first station to get going with the project, he pointed out. On reports of frequent accidents of MIG 21 aircraft, he said that troubles identified in the engines of these aircraft had already been overcome. The number of accidents involving MIG aircraft this year had come down, he said. Dismissing reports about the need for phasing out MIG 21 aircraft, the Air Marshal added that only those aircraft inducted in 1960s, which had exhausted their technical life, flying hours and distance would be phased out.
