THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 22. A bio-waste collection and treatment centre, which will segregate and dispose hospital waste as required under the Bio Medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules 1998, has become functional at the Medical College Hospital here. The open waste dumping yard in the MCH campus has now been converted into a garbage collection centre, where separate bays have been constructed for handling various kinds of waste. All waste will be collected and segregated at source and then transported to this centre, which will arrange for it to be sent to various disposal points. Containers and colour-coded plastic bags have been kept in every lab and ward, with huge display signs directing people how and where to dispose waste materials. Biodegradable waste, including remains of food and paper will be collected in green bags; hazardous biomedical waste in yellow bags; recyclable solid and plastic waste in blue bags and sharp solid wastes such as glass bottles, crushed needles and razor blades in white bags. The Health Inspector, Srikumar, who has helped streamline the system, said that about 3,000 kg of biodegradable waste and some 1,500 kg of toxic waste would have to be managed on a daily basis.
