Rajani S. Anand
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 22. A 22-year-old engineering student, who had to discontinue her studies owing to her inability to pay her college fees, jumped to her death from the top of the Housing Board building at Chenkalchoola Junction in the city on Thursday evening. The police identified the deceased as Rajani S. Anand, daughter of A. Sivanandan of Pattakudivila at Nellisery in Vellarada. She had gained admission for computer engineering course at the Adoor Engineering College last year. After six months, she had to leave the college, as she could not pay the fees. Recently, the girl had taken re-admission at the college after she approached a nationalised bank seeking a study loan. But she failed to secure the loan. The police said the girl had left her house on Wednesday saying that she would be going to her college hostel in Adoor after visiting some relatives in the city. The incident occurred at around 4.30 p.m. The girl, who fell in front of the building, was rushed to the General Hospital in an autorickshaw by two Fire and Rescue Service personnel from the nearby Chenkalchoola Fire Station. She was declared dead at the hospital. The police said the girl was carrying a bag. An identity card issued by the Institute of Human Resources Development in Electronics (IHRDE), Prajoy Towers, Vazhuthacaud, was found inside the bag. A "suicide note" was seen scrawled on the front page of a notebook found inside the girl's bag along with Rs.130.
Some of the employees in the building (which also houses among other offices, the Commissionerate of Entrance Examinations) told the police that they had heard a thud and when they looked out, they saw the body of a girl lying spread-eagled on the ground. The body was being kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. Rajani is survived by her father, mother, Santha and siblings, Shine and Sivan. The Thampanoor police have registered a case of unnatural death.
