Temperature

MADURAI, JULY 22. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.4 degrees Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 118.4 feet with a storage of 2339 mcft. The inflow was 490 cusecs with a discharge of 900 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 41.9 feet with an inflow of 548 cusecs and a discharge of 900 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 3336 mcft. The Periyar dam received a rainfall of 23 mm followed by Marudhanadi — 11, Tekkadi — 5, Sathaiyar dam, Manjalar dam and Sothuparai dam — 2 mm each.

New system

The Corporation on Wednesday introduced a new system of contractors quoting their bid in tenders for various revenue generating activities of the local body by registered post. In a statement, the Commissioner, A. Karthik, quoting the Tamil Nadu Transparency in Tenders Act 1998, said the new system would be followed for the re-tender-cum-auction called for that items that could not be auctioned on earlier occasions. The re-tender would be conducted from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 27 and the auction, if necessary, would be conducted at the same time next day. Those interested could send their bids through registered post with acknowledgement, superscribing `tender', addressed to: The Commissioner, Madurai Corporation, Aringar Anna Maligai, Madurai - 2. Tender applications could also be dropped at the boxes kept at the office, the statement said.

Air horn menace

The district administration and transport authorities launched a drive against air horn menace in the city to bring down the noise pollution decibels. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, inspected the vehicles at the Mattuthavani bus stand here and ensured the removal of air horns form 77 vehicles.
