ECE first choice for many

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 22. Not withstanding the upswing in the IT field and software sector, the loyalties of the top rankers lie with the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch that too in the university engineering colleges.

Clear-cut on choices

<167,2p,1>Abhishek Raja, the 10th ranker in the Eamcet, said that he was interested only in ECE and preferred Osmania University Engineering College. Though he got a seat in Nagpur NIT on the basis of 535 rank in AIEEE, Abhishek opted for OUEC "as it has the best ECE department."

Ramachander Karthik with 45th rank too opted for ECE in OU Engineering College though he secured a seat in Warangal REC. "I got a better rank in Eamcet and could choose my favourite branch in a reputed college," he said.

Divya Krishna Murthy (105 rank) who appeared only for Eamcet became the first girl to be allotted a seat in the counselling centre here on Thursday. She too chose ECE in OU Engineering College as her feedback is that faculty and facilities are better in the OUEC. Her desire is to do something significant in the field of communications.

Pushyam (204 rank) and Sowmya (220) preferred ECE because it is a basic engineering branch and one can learn computer languages outside the college too. Meera who got a seat in ECE in OUEC, says it is one of the oldest colleges with good infrastructure and faculty. Veena who is awaiting her turn, hopes she gets ECE seat even in a private college as "it is an evergreen branch." Her next preferences are EEE and CSE.

Noticing the trend, the Joint Director, Technical Education, P.T. Prabhakar, and other officials say that the preference seems to be for basic engineering courses led by ECE, EEE, CSE and Mechanical engineering. Of the first 50 seat allotments in the State, 34 were for ECE, nine for EEE and seven for CSE.
