KOCHI, JULY 22. The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) has terminated its contract with Ardeshir B. Cursetjee and Sons (ABC&Sons), a Mumbai-based company for transport of liquid ammonia for the FACT through water. The contract was cancelled "in view of the public policy and interest," said a statement from the company here today. The FACT is currently moving its entire requirement of ammonia by road and expects to save more than Rs. 20 crores a year on ammonia transport through the cancellation of the contract. The public sector fertiliser giant had entered into a contract with ABC&Sons in 1986. The contract was renewed till 2008. The contract was renewed amidst controversy over the exorbitant rate paid by the FACT to the transporting company.
Lorry strike
The FACT resorted to moving fertiliser products from the company by rail from Kalamassery and Ambalamugal after road transport of ammonium sulphate and factomphose had come to a standstill over a row between lorry owners and transport contractors. One rake of fertiliser products was sent by rail on Thursday from Kalamassery.
