VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 22. Gone are the days when one had to make several trips to a bank to obtain a loan. Nationalised banks, perhaps in the face of stiff competition from private banks, are going all out to advance loans to people. The State Bank of Hyderabad has set up a stall at the Government Polytechnic, venue of the regional counselling centre for admission to engineering courses. The facility is a boon to poor parents whose children have scored good ranks in EAMCET but cannot afford to meet the high cost of engineering education. P. Venkateswara Rao, who runs a small canteen at Visalakshinagar, and his wife were visibly excited when the SBH officials told them that their son could obtain a loan without any collateral security. His son, Phani Kumar, had obtained 97 per cent marks in the Intermediate examination and a rank of 1737 in EAMCET. He got a seat in civil engineering in Andhra University in the counselling held on Thursday. Mr Venkateswara Rao earns about Rs.5,000 a month which is hardly sufficient to meet the needs of his family. .
