Weather

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 29.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday. There was no change in humidity; it remained at 87 per cent. Rainfall of 1.1 mm was recorded.

No power supply

There will be no power supply between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday in some areas under the Ring Road section due to a pre-arranged shutdown for reinforcement of the conductor. The affected areas are LIC Colony, Jaya Prakash Nagar, Christurajpuram and Sunnapubattilu Centre.

Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Thursday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - Rs. 53, palmolein oil - Rs. 45, sunflower oil - Rs. 53, tamarind (flower variety) - Rs. 31 to 35, tamarind (karipuli variety) - Rs. 40 to 45, chillies (AC) - Rs. 24 to 28, chillies (non-AC) - Rs. 14 to 18, rice (2716) - Rs. 13, rice (superfine) - Rs. 14 to 15, rice (samba masoori) - Rs. 15 to 25, black gram - Rs. 19 to 25, and red gram - Rs. 22.50 to 32.

Book released

The Telugu translation of Shiv Khera's international bestseller `You Can Win,' `Meeru Vijayam Sadhinchagalaru,' was released recently. Priced at Rs. 195, the book, translated by R. Santha Sundari and published by MacMillan India Ltd, has sold over 2,500 copies. The publishers are offering gifts like cups and posters for institutional and corporate users.

Kapus displeased

The Andhra Pradesh State Kapunadu has expressed concern over the delay in including kapus in the Backward Classes list. A delegation of leaders, who met the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, recently, explained the problems faced by kapus. The Chief Minister favoured the constitution of a new commission to look into the matter, the kapunadu president, Pilla Venkateswara Rao, said. He said kapus were against the idea as the process had already been subject to delays, and called upon the members of the kapu community to be prepared to stage dharnas in front of the district collectorates on Oct 1.
