BANGALORE, JULY 22. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has decided to demolish the housing quarters for the economically weaker sections (EWS) at Ejipura and reconstruct it by involving private builders. The process of vacating the quarters started on Thursday. The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, gave cheques of Rs. 5,000 each to 36 families of the `E' block in the quarters. All the 504 families of the 42 blocks in the quarters would be vacated in the next 15 days, the Mayor said. "We have decided to involve private builders. The new complex will be a sustainable project with a framed structure. The quality of the project can be maintained if it is entrusted to private builders," the Mayor said. As the complex was located on 1.8 hectares of land in a prime locality, a joint venture scheme could work well. The land would be given by the BMP, and the builder would invest his money and construct the houses. The houses would come up in the rear of the building, and the builder would be given the front portion for commercial use. The builder could retain the rent or lease accruing from the complex, he explained. Parts of the EWS complex, which was built in 1986 with a Rs. 2.23-crore HUDCO loan, have collapsed several times in the past one year. Residents are under constant fear of the building coming down any moment. Following the collapse of the 13 "B' block of the complex in November last year, the former Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, directed the BMP to demolish and reconstruct the quarters. He had also asked the BMP to blacklist the 13 contractors and initiate action against the three engineers involved in the construction. In January this year, the BMP issued notices to the residents to vacate the flats. But they refused to move out. A survey conducted by the BMP to identify the original house owners in the complex revealed that tenants occupied 1,101 of the 1,512 flats. While 258 were occupied by owners, the rest were vacant. "The new houses will be allotted to the original house owners. But we are paying the Rs. 5,000 compensation to all the inmates of the quarters, irrespective of whether they are original allottees or tenants," the Mayor added.
