NEW DELHI, JULY 22. The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for filing of return for the assessment year 2004-05 to October 31.

In an official statement issued here today, the Department said the due date for filing of income tax return by salaried and other non-corporate assessees has been extended from July 31 to October 31, 2004.

Significantly, last year too the Department had extended the last date for filing income tax return by three months to October 31 to facilitate taxpayers.

Earlier, the last date for filing income tax returns used to be June 30, which through amendments in the Income Tax Act, has been fixed at July 31.

Since last year, the last date is being extended beyond July 31 with the number of taxpayers increasing to over 3.2 crores.

Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department, continuing with its policy of deploying technology in service of taxpayers, has set up an "Aaykar Sampark Kendra" (ASK) -- a dedicated phone-in-service (Phone No. 0124-2438000) to provide information and services to taxpayers.

A taxpayer can get information on PAN (Permanent Account Number), obtain application form for PAN or ascertain status of PAN application.

Taxpayers can also ask for commonly required forms like 2C, 2D or 2E, and application form for PAN.

Taxpayers can also get forms and "challans" that will be sent through fax or email.

The Department also plans to add more features to the helpline service soon. Notably, the Department has started receiving PAN applications online through its website http://tin.nsdl.com.
