PATHANAMTHITTA, JULY 23. The Principal of the College of Engineering, Adoor, Cherian Scaria, has said that the college has nothing to do with the death of Rajani S. Anand. Rajani, a Computer Engineering student of the college run by the Institute of Human Resource Development in Electronics, committed suicide in the State capital on Thursday by jumping from a high-rise building. According to Mr. Scaria, Rajani had never been asked to remit any tuition fee since her fee used to be remitted by the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department in time. The principal said Rajani had not been attending classes since August 7, and the college had not received any application for her transfer certificate so far. Mr. Scaria said the college did not have hostel facility for girls and Rajani was reportedly staying at a private hostel in Adoor. Being an Scheduled Caste student, she received Rs.2,314 as stipend on June 9, 2003 and the stipend for the current academic year, Rs.2,410, was sanctioned on April 1, 2004. But nobody had turned up to receive the money, he added. The authorities of the hostel where Rajani was staying, when contacted, said she had vacated the hostel room in August 2003 and that she had no dues to the hostel.
Agitation
Meanwhile, students and youth owing allegiance to the feeder organisations of Left parties took out a protest march to the college today, blaming the college authorities for the suicide of Rajani. They laid siege to the Principal's office till a police party removed them. In a statement here today, the Revolutionary Youth Front (RYF) State secretary, Saleem P. Chacko, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) district secretary, R. Sanalkumar, and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) district secretary, A.M. Aji, demanded action against the college Principal and the manager of the bank that reportedly denied educational loan to the girl.
