This Day That Age
The level in the Krishna river rose to 14.1 feet above the crest of the anicut at Vijayawada on July 23. The Krishna Lanka area, a residential locality of the town, was inundated and the residents started evacuation in boats. The water-level under the Krishna railway bridge is 59.3 feet. The forecast received from Kurnool and other places indicates a further rise in the level by one foot. The River Conservatory Act came into operation since the level reached 12 feet above the crest of the anicut and boats were requisitioned and kept ready to meet any emergency for evacuating the people and cattle from the central islands of the Krishna river. It is stated that this rise in level is due to rains in the Western Ghats.
